How we teach

Lithuanian Language and Culture lessons for those who want real results

We are a school, so we teach consistently, in a structured and academic way. Children develop their speaking, reading, and writing skills in Lithuanian. Younger students get to know Lithuanian culture, while older students study Lithuanian history, Lithuanian geography, and the foundations of civic awareness.

Engaging learning

It’s not only the teachers who talk during lessons. Children are encouraged to actively get involved, take part in discussions, and join in activities.

Learning languages supports brain development

In childhood, the brain is at its most plastic and most receptive to languages. When children learn several languages at once, they more easily recognize the structures behind them. They show better cognitive flexibility, attention, and adaptability to their environment.

When growing up abroad, knowledge of the Lithuanian language, civic awareness, history, and geography helps a child maintain a sense of identity and belonging.

The Lithuanian language is useful beyond summers at the grandparents’

Speaking with parents in their language helps the child better understand their emotions, with fewer details “lost in translation.” The language helps form friendships during lessons or while on holiday in Lithuania. More and more young people who grew up abroad are choosing to continue their studies, do internships, or pursue a career in Lithuania – and a rich Lithuanian language, along with strong reading and writing skills, becomes especially valuable.

When we moved to London, the biggest challenge was maintaining the children’s Lithuanian. In the first year, I taught them myself — we read in the evenings and spoke only Lithuanian at home. But I realised that wasn’t enough. I noticed that once English started to dominate daily life, Lithuanian deteriorated very quickly. I heard about Karalienės Mortos mokykla through a Lithuanian parents’ group. We gave it a try, and within the first month it was clear that the teachers were true professionals and that the children received plenty of individual attention. The homework is not excessive – straightforward, but consistent. It matters to me that lessons don’t become a chore for the children, and here they actually enjoy them. In the first year, he attended a local Lithuanian Saturday school. A wonderful community, and I look back on those times fondly, but academically it was too simple. The group included both five-year-olds and twelve-year-olds; they sang songs and did drawings. For a son who could already read, it was boring. I found Karalienės Mortos mokykla through Austėja’s podcast. I was immediately drawn to the professional approach to education, and over two years we have seen enormous progress.
